Essex class carriers are vintage World War II carriers that served on duty for almost a half of a century. Having over a dozen roles it was the core of the post-war fleet. To accommodate the jet aircraft the flight deck and the landing system of the air craft carrier had to be modified. An angled flight deck, which allows the launching of several aircraft and the hurricane bow as added to not only allow more take offs, but to accommodate more jets per ship. These upgrades are apart of the Fleet Rehabilitation and Modernization upgrade program,


US Navy Destroyers are world famous and one of the most famous is the USS Arleigh Burke.  Named after Admiral Arleigh Albert Burke, this ship has the distinction of leading the Arleigh Burke class of US Navy Destroyers which are guided missile destroyers. Built in Bath Maine in 1988, the destroyer’s designers used lessons learned from the UK Navy during the Falkland Campaigns. Utilizing stealth technology, this all steel US Nave destroyer has the capability to work in chemical or radiological contaminated waters.

The U.S. Navy Cutlass was a sword adopted in 1860 and used in the Spanish-American War.  It was also used by the French Navy. Curtal axe is what Cutlass is derived from and means an ancient heavy but short weapon.

The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are an acrobatic flight demonstration team which began in April of 1946.  Their acrobatic shows draw millions of fans every year from March until November with special appearances at air shows on Memorial Day and Labor Day.


The U.S. Navy Blue Angels are made up of both officers and enlisted ranks from the U.S. Navy in addition to the Marine Corps.  Pilots usually serve two years and the position they are assigned is dependent upon the team needs, pilot experience and career considerations of its members.

The list of U.S. Navy Ships is listed alphabetically according to the first name and not the last name.  For example the Lady Washington is listed under L for Lady and not W for Washington.

There are various US Navy ranks a person considering a career in the Navy could go through.  Gold stripes are used on the uniform for 12 years of service or more.  Two silver stripes means a Seaman apprentice; three white stripes are for a Seaman; then there is the Petty Officer Third Class, Petty Officer Second Class and Petty Officer First Class.  After that comes the Chief Petty Officer, Senior Chief Petty Officer, Master Chief Petty Officer and a Fleet/Command Master Chief Petty Officer.  The highest U.S. Navy rank a Navy officer could achieve is Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy.

Little is known about U.S. Navy uniforms compared to other military uniforms.  Some might even say they are mythical because most people think they are older than what they really are.


Most controversy surrounding the U.S. Navy uniforms comes from the enlisted men’s bell bottomed trousers which used to contain eleven buttons on the flap and then were redesigned sometime in the 1990s and added two more buttons for account of 13 total buttons to represent the original 13 colonies.  Many of the recruiters were never told of the original eleven button bellbottoms and only told the story of the 13 buttons that represents the original colonies.

The first unit or team of US Navy Seals was organized in 1962.  US Navy Seals are collectively disciplined, individually reliable and highly skilled men and women of the Armed Forces.  US Navy Seals go through the toughest training imaginable by any military standards.  Navy Seals must be physically fit, mentally competent, highly motivated and combat ready at all times.


US Navy Seals make up less than one percent of the total US Navy personnel however their contribution to any conflict is greater than their sum total.  The difference between a U.S. Navy Seal and other military personnel is that they strike from and then return to the sea.
